Is she offering her hair?

The sentence fragment on this page is such a tease! Is she reminding her off a past trade or proposing a new one? Is she the youngest sister? Another sister? No sister at all?

Arghhh!

Nerissa is pointing to her hair, her mute way asking what happened to her older siblings hair.
And yes, Nerissa is the youngest sister.

I just realized Nerissa has the same pearl necklaces as her sisters do.

Can someone explain something to me. If this is a mermaid reference, what on did Nerissa trade for it? She must still have her voice, cause the Prince threatened to the Princess to cut out her tongue like he did Nerissa’s. So I’m guessing she had at some point could speak. So what could she had traded instead of her voice.

Maybe he was lying about cutting out the tongue, to make himself seem more threatening to the princess?

He didn’t actually say *he* cut out her tongue – he didn’t say “I’ll cut your tongue out like I did Nerissa’s”, just “like Nerissa’s”. It’s never said *who* cut her tongue out – presumably, that would have been the sea witch when Nerissa “traded her voice”. (This isn’t Disney, I doubt there’s a glowy ball of light stored in a seashell somewhere :P)

And no, I’m not defending the Prince, he’s still an arse – I just don’t believe he’s as much of an arse as people think.

What if the Prince made the trade after the mermaid. The last dialog piece is making me think.

Yeah, I’m starting to suspect that Nerissa was never there voluntarily.

That would certainly be interesting. I had the same thought. Maybe he’s the one who traded something to get here with him. Who knows.

It’s an interesting thought, but I think they just meant freeing her from her contract.

Let’s see that knife from the witch…

Well, my bet is that Nerissa really did fall in love with the prince and asked the sea witch to turn her human (I’m uncertain about her tongue, but I think the witch cut it, not Kadar). Then she actually found out how much of an asshole he was, but then it was too late to turn back.

With every page that sticks to the original fairy tale, I just get more and more impatient for the twist…

Oh crap, wasn’t the little mermaid supposed to kill the prince and his new wife?

Nope, she just loses the contract she made with the witch to have the prince fall in love and marry her. She dissolves into sea foam at the end of the Hans Christian Anderson tale.
