Anyone have any guesses as to which fairytale this chapter is supposed to be based on? I was hoping by now I could have figured it out, but I got nothing.

Maybe 1001 nights?

My guess is something Japanese, what with the old master there.

The story I’m thinking of at the moment would be Kaguya-Hime, aka Taketori Monogatari (Tale of the Bamboo cutter).
Person wandering in the mountains finds a child inside a stalk of bamboo. (Girl finds a baby inside a tree.)

The theme of light helps, seeing as the baby is supposed to be a child of the Moon.

Did she just sell her harp to get those pearls?

No – there were pearls in the mermaid chest after she and Gideon washed up – she’s using the pearls to pay for fixing the harp. 🙂

I *thought* she had pearls from the mermaids, which is what was so confusing here! Why would she need or even WANT more?
